Dr. Bonventre is the Samuel A. Levine Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Renal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research has been focused on the study of kidney injury and repair with a special focus on inflammation, translational biomarkers and stem cells. He discovered that the KRAB-A domain inhibits transcription, a fact that has been exploited in CRISPRi technology. He discovered Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1), a urinary and plasma injury and prognostic biomarker. He created protocols to convert human stem cells to kidney tissue.

He has more than 442 original research publications, 157 reviews/chapters and editorials and 3 books. His work has been referenced more than 92,000 times (h-index of 151). He has been elected to multiple honorific Societies. Dr. Bonventre is a Past-President of the American Society of Nephrology and founding member of the Board of Directors of the National Space Biology Research Institute. He has served as a member of the Advisory Council of the NIH-NIDDK. Dr. Bonventre is Editor of Seminars in Nephrology.
